"Our leading exponent of the avant-garde flute"
-Kyle Gann, THE VILLAGE VOICE

Flutist of choice for hoards of composers, Margaret Lancaster is an artist who hasn't merely 'pushed the envelope' of flute performance and repertoire, she's redefined it with fearless technique, musicianship, wit, and a clear sense of performance values. Noted for her inter-disciplinary collaboration with writers and composers, she has built a large repertoire of contemporary flute works composed specifically for her, that employ extended techniques, dance, drama, multi-media, and electronics.

A recurring performer at Spoleto Festival USA, Three Two Festival and Santa Fe New Music, Lancaster is a member of Essential Music, Glass Farm Ensemble and Downtown Ensemble, and has been a guest artist with Counter)induction, Ne(x)tworks and the Talujon Percussion Quartet. Recent performance highlights include the Lincoln Center Festival (w/ the Merce Cunningham Dance Co.), Festival de Otono (Madrid), Whitney Museum, Subtropics Festival, Festival D'Automne (Paris), Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art and Bremen MusikFest with Absolute. She has appeared as a lecturer/soloist at many sites including Stanford University, Dartmouth College Festival of New Musics, Princeton University, Bennington College, North Carolina School of the Arts, and the National Flute Association annual convention. Lancaster is the recipient of a 2003 Meet the Composer Commissioning Music/USA grant for a new multi-disciplinary solo work by Carolyn Yarnell. She will soon be recording for New World Records, who received an Aaron Copland recording grant to produce her CD of solo and chamber works for flute by American Experimental composers.
